Our current physical/physiological and emotional response unconsciously guides the type of memories and associations that will be recalled; present states of fear evoke fear-based memories, which in turn reinforce the present agitated state. This can lead to a positive (“runaway”) feedback loop of increasing distress and potential retraumatization.
